Australian Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, has announced the first competitive grants round under the AU$201 million Filling the Research Gap program. The program is a key part of the Carbon Farming Futures Fund, under the AU$1.7 billion Land Sector Package.

Minister Ludwig, said up to AU$48 million in competitive grants will be available in the first round of the program. “This is the first opportunity for the Australian research sector to apply for funds under the Government’s Securing a Clean Energy Future plan,” he said.

“The land sector holds the promise of countless untapped abatement opportunities. “This research program will identify and develop new low–cost abatement options for farmers and other land managers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon, enhancing sustainable agricultural practices.

Filling the Research Gap is an ongoing program that will invest in priority research over the next six years. “Ongoing research is needed to unlock new opportunities for farmers and land managers to generate additional income from the carbon they store in the landscape by participating in the Carbon Farming Initiative and creating carbon credits.
