Ministry in gun for piles of destructive slash [NZ]Friday 4 Sep 2026
The Ministry is responsible for commercial harvesting of pine trees at Tokararangi Forest, 185km northeast of Gisborne, on land owned by the Māori Trustee (which acts as trustee to administer Māori freehold land and other assets on behalf of the beneficial owners). The forest sits on very steep land that is highly susceptible to erosion and sediment loss. Numerous streams flow through the forest and enter the sea, which at some points is just 400m from the forest boundary. In 2016 and 2018 the Ministry was granted resource consent by Gisborne District Council to harvest the forest, which covers some 1130 hectares. More >> Source: Stuff | ||
