Biomass trial produces industrial heat at less than $3/GJ [AU]

A biomass trial at JBS Riverina's Yanco facility in New South Wales has produced thermal energy at a supply cost of less than $3 per gigajoule (GJ), highlighting the potential for biomass to provide a lower-cost alternative to conventional industrial fuels.

The trial, conducted through an Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC) pilot programme, used a combination of biomass feedstocks including woodchip, sawdust, partially digested grain and grass from animal paunches, and nut shells.

The different feedstocks were blended and processed in a biomass boiler to provide thermal energy for the facility.

The results compare favourably with the reported costs of other thermal energy sources, with on-site coal estimated at around $10/GJ and grid gas at approximately $25/GJ.

For energy-intensive industries facing continued pressure on operating costs, the trial demonstrates how locally available biomass and other organic waste streams could provide an alternative source of industrial heat.

It also highlights a broader opportunity for the forestry and wood processing sectors, with woodchip and sawdust forming part of a wider range of biomass feedstocks that can be combined to meet industrial energy requirements.

The Yanco trial will be discussed by Gareth Forde, Principal Engineer at All Energy, at Residues2Revenues 2026 in Brisbane on 23–24 September. His presentation will also cover other case studies involving blended biomass feedstocks for thermal energy and low-emissions fertiliser manufacturing.

The event will also examine emerging uses for wood residues in liquid fuels, lignin-based products, biochar, carbon removal and other applications, bringing together forestry, wood processing, energy and technology companies..
