South Island spaceport found to be feasible [NZ]

A study by French space firm SpacedreamS has confirmed the feasibility of developing a major spaceport south of Christchurch to support European rocket launches.

Conducted for Tāwhaki, a Crown-iwi national aerospace joint venture, the assessment found a New Zealand launch site could help European operators manage risks associated with weather, technical bottlenecks and geopolitical tensions.

Located at Kaitōrete Spit near Lake Ellesmere Te Waihora, the proposed multi-use facility would become New Zealand’s second orbital launch site after Rocket Lab’s Mahia complex. The project represents a significant step forward for Tāwhaki following earlier funding reductions, as the region looks to tap into the rapid growth of the global space industry.
