SnapStat: The future of NZ ETS - Can it find its way? [NZ]

Friday 25 Sep 2026

In late August, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE) released a new report examining the future of New Zealand's Emissions Trading Scheme (NZ ETS). The scheme has been a cornerstone climate policy tool since 2008 – but how well is it doing its job?

The report finds that the NZ ETS will not achieve our climate goals, nor will it yield carbon prices high enough to significantly reduce emissions. In summary the commission is saying the NZ ETS has reached a critical turning point, and major reform is needed. Today's graphic shows carbon credit pricing since 2010.
