Barriers and opportunities for Gippsland transport infrastructure

The Gippsland Forestry Hub
completed its Transport Infrastructure Barriers and Opportunities report
late last year, outlining the key transport challenges facing the
regional communities and the practical opportunities to improve access,
safety and productivity.
Some key findings were:
- Transport is now the biggest cost for Gippsland forestry, with
longer haul distances and fewer local processing options driving up
prices.
- Road and bridge limits are holding the sector back, restricting
access for safer, more efficient high‑productivity vehicles.
- Targeted road upgrades and better access rules could deliver quick
wins, improving safety and supporting regional jobs.
Wood fibre relies on efficient transport and haulage networks to move
critical material across Victoria, and with the supply chain heavily
reliant on fuel for harvesting, haulage, silviculture and fire
preparedness, it is more important than ever to emphasise streamlined
transport networks.
