Tasmanian laminated hardwood launched

In a major milestone, Forestry Tasmania has recently launched Hardlam, the first product to be developed under their Forestry Innovation Plan. Hardlam is an outstanding opportunity for Tasmania to supply an in-demand, value-added wood product to Australia and overseas. With its launch, Forestry Tasmania’s aim is to develop Tasmania as a regional hub renowned for innovation in value-added wood products is firmly on track.

Hardlam is a veneer-based engineered wood product with some superior characteristics to traditional sawn timber in terms of strength and stability – and it’s manufactured from the low-grade logs that arise from the harvest of native forests and plantations, which would otherwise be wood chipped. This will be a great advantage in maintaining forest industry competitiveness and productivity as the supply of large-diameter, high quality sawlogs from State forest decreases.

Hardlam is a versatile product that’s well suited to structural and appearance-grade applications. Forestry Tasmania developed Hardlam in conjunction with its overseas partners, who will market the product into Asia, particularly China. Locally, Forestry Tasmania is now looking for partners to produce Hardlam for the Australian and New Zealand markets.
