Tasmanian forestry peace talks in disarray

Environmental groups have accused the forestry industry of holding Tasmania's forest peace talks to ransom. As reported last week, the Forest Industry Association of Tasmania (FIAT) will not return to the negotiations until the State Government ensures Forestry Tasmania will continue to control production forests. That has incensed environmental groups involved in the peace talks. Both the Australian Conservation Foundation and The Wilderness Society have criticised FIAT for walking out for a second time.

To add to the talk’s disarray, the Australian Forest Contractors Association has also decided to join the Forest Industry Association of Tasmania and the Australian Forest Products Association and leave the 10-party talks. Forestry Tasmania chairman Miles Hampton also resigned this week over the State Government's restructuring plan for the state-owned company saying that he could no longer support the policies of the Government and accused it of trying to starve Forestry Tasmania of cash.
