FIAT walks away from talksThere are fears Tasmania's forest peace talks could be jeopardised by a key signatory walking away from the table. Glenn Britton from the Forest Industries Association confirmed the group had postponed its participation in the talks because of changes at Forestry Tasmania. The State Government announced it was splitting Forestry Tasmania's commercial and non-commercial functions and said non-commercial functions would be absorbed within other government departments.Mr Britton said he had been assured Forestry Tasmania's responsibility for managing reserves would not be handed to a Government department. "We were given assurances by the Government that with the review of Forestry Tasmania, the vital ownership of Tasmania's forests would remain with Forestry Tasmania and not be handed over to a ministerial or government department such as DIER or DPIPWE," he said. | |
