Innovation to the fore in after-dinner presentations
In Australia, the AU$11 million, 10 storey timber building, Australia’s first high rise apartment building and the tallest of its kind in the world has received considerable press since it was announced on 25 May. Known as Forte, the building in Melbourne will rise to 32 metres and is being built with prefabricated wooden panels made from cross laminated timber featuring 23 apartments.
CLT is the most significant form of innovation in construction technology that Australia has seen in many years and is expected to transform the construction industry. Progress on the building can be checked out with the live webcam. Kate Pearsall, Sustainability Manager, Development from Lend Lease will be speaking in Australia on the first night of the Wood Innovations 2012 conference on Wednesday 10 October on this unique project.
In New Zealand, at the conference dinner planned for Tuesday 4 December, Jason Cordes, Managing Director EROS Capital Ltd will speak on a new plan to use 90 ha of industrial land adjacent to Red Stag Timber into an Enterprise Zone or hub for timber and biomass processing. This is the sort of concept that has been trialled successfully in other countries and offers a real opportunity for investors and forest products companies in and around Rotorua.
